Get Familiar With These Little Strangers!

You’ve probably heard by now that Virgin Media Ireland is the new title sponsor of the Dublin International Film Festival - and we’re already counting down the days until the action begins next February!

The partnership was celebrated in earnest this week with the premiere of the outstanding new psychological drama The Little Stranger, which took place on Wednesday in The Lighthouse Cinema and saw stars Domhnall Gleeson, Ruth Wilson and director Lenny Abrahamson hitting the red carpet. The atmospheric period piece hits cinemas next Friday, and lands on Virgin Movies later this year – but in the meantime, get a load of the stars’ other work right now!

Since we’ve seen Domhnall Gleeson grace our screen in all manner of sci-fi capers over the years, there’s something quaint about seeing him use time-travel for something as simple as improving his love life – if only it was simple, that is! Written and directed by rom-com king Richard Curtis, it’s a charming and sentimental tale – but with plenty of winning comedy courtesy of our man and his leading lady, Rachel McAdams.

If you thought the weather outside was getting cold now that summer is over, you ain’t seen nothing yet! The extreme conditions - never mind the palpable tension, fear and drama - are brought to life in extraordinary fashion in this adventure epic, which sees Gleeson star alongside the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, and his The Little Stranger cohort Will Poulter. It’s visceral, it’s vital, and without a doubt some of the finest filmmaking of the decade.

Seasons 1-4 available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

While Idris Elba’s stylish sleuth might be the focus of the cracking crime drama, there was plenty of scenes stolen by the sociopathic Alice Morgan – portrayed in ice-cold fashion by Ruth Wilson. We don’t want to give anything away if you haven’t watched the show yet, but more than a few eyebrows were raised when it was suggested Alice might just be back for the upcoming fifth season; if you want to know why, get caught up right now!

Lenny Abrahamson had been a favourite son of Irish film for years – check out Adam and Paul, What Richard Did and Garage (all available to rent on Virgin Movies) to see why! – but this was the moment we knew we had to share him with the world! A stunning piece of work that saw Brie Larson collect every award known to man for her lead role, the story of a young mother and son locked in a tiny space is harrowing, affecting, and utterly unforgettable.
