Your Summer Sporting Diet - The Top Action On The Box

Summer of Sport 2019

It used to be that the summer months meant making your own sporting drama; kickabouts on the street, frisbee on the beach, and swimming races aplenty. It’s much the same these days, of course, except for one vital point – there’s loads of the stuff to enjoy on the box too!

While we might take summer holidays, the sporting world never sleeps – and there’s a whole lot of proof on Sky Sports in the coming weeks! So whether your idea of fun is a knock at the crease or a stroll on the course, line up your summer sporting fix right here; we’ve got some dates for your diary…

CRICKET WORLD CUP FINAL

Sunday July 14th, Sky Sports Cricket, Virgin TV 402

The biggest prize in the gentleman’s game is up for grabs at Lord’s, as the curtain falls on a superb six weeks of action. The contestants aren’t yet known, of course – the semi-finals on Tuesday and Thursday, also on Sky Sports Cricket, will settle that! – but with the wheat separated from the chaff during a marathon round-robin group stage, you’re guaranteed nothing but the best in these closing stages. Expect big hitting, big moments, and the biggest of parties once the victors are decided!

THE OPEN

From Thursday July 18th, Sky Sports Golf, Virgin TV 404

The oldest of golf’s majors swings into action for the 148th time – this time taking place in Portrush, the first time it’s landed on the island of Ireland since 1951. While it’s no surprise that Northern Irish hero Rory McIlroy will have the backing of the home crowd, he’s got plenty of company as far as hotly-tipped contenders are concerned; Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods – both major winners already this year – are also well favoured, while a who’s who of the sport will also be jostling it out for ownership of the Claret Jug.

THE RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP

From Saturday July 20th, Sky Sports Action, Virgin TV 403

They might not have spent much time working on the name, but put that aside; the southern hemisphere tournament is as exhilarating as rugby gets. The opening weekend sees South Africa hosting Australia and Argentina welcoming New Zealand, kicking off a shortened version of the competition ahead of this autumn’s global showpiece. That opens up the possibilty of a surprise, of course – as well as a chance for viewers to get some scouting in before Japan arrives – so there’s plenty of reason to scrum down for this one!

WORLD MATCHPLAY DARTS

From Saturday July 20th, Sky Sports Action, Virgin TV 403

The titans of tungsten have Blackpool in their sights for one of the annual highlights in darts, as 32 of the world’s best assemble to duke it out at the Winter Gardens. Mighty Michael van Gerwen will begin as favourite, but a veritable murderer’s row of challengers – former world champs Rob Cross and Gary Anderson included – will be determined to stop the Dutchman. Grab a bevvie, get your best fancy dress on, and join in the fun; by the time the final rolls around on July 28th, you’ll be wondering where the week got to!
