What You Need To Know Before Vasiliy Lomachenko v Luke Campbell

Lomachenko V Campbell 2019

This Saturday sees a titanic title fight headed for Sky Sports Box Office, as Vasiliy Lomachenko puts his WBC, WBO and WBA ‘Super’ lightweight titles on the line against Luke Campbell, live from the O2 in London.

With the action getting underway from 6pm, it promises to be a knockout evening; you can order the fight right here – and if you need to get up to speed before the first bell, then read on…

WHO IS VASILIY LOMACHENKO?

For many, he’s the greatest boxer on the face of the planet. A two-time Olympic gold medallist, the Ukranian needed just three fights to claim his first world title in the paid ranks, and now stands a three division king after reigns with feather- and lightweight belts.

A southpaw with remarkable footwork, sparkling intelligence and razor-sharp skills, he’s known for making it look as though he’s operating at a completely different level to opponents – hence why fans call him ‘The Matrix’.

SO LUKE CAMPBELL IS IS FOR A TOUGH NIGHT?

Perhaps so – but don’t count him out. Trained by Shane McGuigan, he is himself an Olympic champ; his win came in 2012, at the expense of John-Joe Nevin. While shocked against Yvan Mendy four years ago, his only blemish since came against Jorge Linares – who himself gave Lomachenko an almighty scare.

His rangy southpaw style has caused headaches for many opponents, and the man known as ‘Cool Hand’ reckons his awkwardness could be the secret to springing what would go down as a major upset.

WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN?

The experts are forecasting a one-sided affair, with Lomachenko tipped to add another stoppage victory to his ever-improving record. In boxing, though, home support has been known to be quite the equaliser – and battles between two lefties can often turn into scrappy, unpredictable affairs. So…we’re not committing to anything! But, sure, you’re here – let us know what you reckon!

WHAT ELSE CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO?

There’s plenty more fantastic fights on the card, including Hughie Fury and Alexander Povetkin in a heavyweight tussle that ranks as a must-win for both fighters. WBC flyweight king Charlie Edwards puts his strap on the line against Julio Cesar Martinez, while there’s also a chance to see former amateur champ Savannah Marshall, as she targets a showdown with middleweight maestro Claressa Shields.
