Her role as the long-suffering Sophie was the first time many viewers laid eyes on the Norwich-born actress – and playing a part in the cult favourite earned her a place in our hearts to this day! The show was a perfect balance of the fresh (just think of the first time you saw the result of the helmet cams!) and the familiar – with awkward office romance being perhaps as familiar a trope as you could imagine! She traversed quite a path as the show went on, too – with her Bristol-based party period being one of our faves!

 

 

 

BROADCHURCH (2013)

It’s one of the finest British crime dramas of the decade – and that’s saying something! As one half of a dynamic detective duo alongside David Tennant, she proved that it’s not just the funny business where she can deliver – she’s also a dab hand when it comes to tense and taut mysteries. The whole show is a delight – from the scenery of the English coast to the chemistry between its leading lights – and her performance is no exception; earning a BAFTA and an International Emmy, it marked another major stepping stone on her way to superstardom…

 

 

 

THE FAVOURITE (2018)

Her effort as Queen Anne was a crowning glory of her career… and she got the gong to prove it! Yorgos Lanthimos’ quirky caper is wonderfully written and looks amazing but there’s no doubting the star of the show; at turns hapless and hysterical, her take on the monarch is scene-stealing to the last. It also, of course, gave us the wonderful speech come Oscar night, which was as impressive as any on-screen turn thus far. And yeah, we said thus far – because who knows what might come next?!
