Mary Poppins Returns and Other Musicals Worth Making A Song And Dance About

Best Modern Movie Musicals

One of the most beloved characters in film history is back, in one of the movie events of the year – Mary Poppins Returns has landed on Virgin Movies, and it’s already on the list of our favourite things!

The film, available now on Virgin Movies from €4.99, sees the original supernanny floating back into action, with Emily Blunt in the brolly-toting lead role. Musical maestro Lin Manuel Miranda is also part of the all-singing-all-dancing effort, while all the magic – and melody – that the made the original so special is present and correct too.

Mind, it’s not the only option out there if you fancy something along those lines; here are a few more fantastic films to get toes tapping…

LA LA LAND

Available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €2.99

If we’re going to talk about old-school Hollywood throwbacks, then where else could we start?! With an oversized nod to the golden age of musicals, this utterly charming effort sees Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling pull on their dancing shoes, while the detailed direction of Damien Chazelle – himself an obsessive music fan – makes it an absolute treat for all the senses!

PITCH PERFECT

Available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

Acapella they may be, but the Barden Bellas could go toe-to-toe with mega-powered metal bands when it comes to making some noise! Heartwarming and hilarious in equal measure, a winning combination of shining performances and marvellous melodies make this a movie that will make you swear off instruments for good…well OK, maybe not quite – but you’ll certainly see singers in a whole new light!

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €4.99

The story of Freddie Mercury and Queen is the type that could’ve been scripted for the big screen – so it’s little surprise that the Hollywood treatment has been such a roaring success! Rami Malek embodies the iconic frontman with uncanny accuracy, but the film’s ultimate trump card is its stupendous soundtrack. There’s only one question to ask – can you do the fandango?!

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

An awesome animation turned into a lovable live-action effort, the tale as old as time is brought to life in a fashion just as enchanting as you might remember. Emma Watson and Dan Stevens are both amazing in the titles roles, though it’s the hundreds of animated objects – nearly all of whom can hold a tune – who might be the real stars of the show!
