How The Crown Sparkles – An Interview With Alison Griffiths

The Crown behind the scenes

If – like millions of people around the world – you’ve found yourself swooning at the sumptuous visuals of The Crown, then you might have wondered just how the Netflix hit looks so utterly wonderful. Well, part of the answer is down to a native of Celbridge, Kildare – visual effects producer Alison Griffiths!

Part of the multi-talented team at One Of Us, she’s been involved in the royally entertaining show since the beginning – and so had loads of light to shed on what goes into making it shine! The whole interview can be found in the new issue of PLAY Magazine – but here’s a sneak peek at some of what you’ll find…

GETTING IN ON THE GROUND FLOOR

“When we started working on it, it was obviously the very first season, so we didn’t know just how big a hit it would grow to be. And even Netflix – it was around, but it wasn’t as popular as it is now. We could never have imagined just how big Netflix original series were going to become.”

ON BRINGING THE SETS TO LIFE

“After the first season had aired, our locations manager received a call to ask how we’d received permission to film in Buckingham Palace. The Crown is actually filmed in Elstree Studios in London – so it was our role to build almost the entire background set. The only shot of the Palace that’s authentic is the tunnel. That’s when we kind of thought, ‘Yeah, we’ve done our job well!’”

ON LANDING BAFTA AND EMMY AWARDS

“It was like an out of body experience to be told be were nominated, never mind winning! I actually thought I was going to be sick when I heard the news”.
