What is 4G?

4G provides mobile data speeds up to ten times faster than 3G. So no more waiting around while your favourite websites painfully load on your mobile, it’s all in a flash. Browsing, streaming, downloading - everything gets a speed boost.

How can I get 4G with Virgin Mobile?

All Virgin Mobile customers get 4G included for free. If your phone can support 4G and you’re in an area that has 4G coverage, then welcome to Speedtown.

What do I need to get 4G with Virgin Mobile?

Four things:
1. Be on a 4G plan. Which if you’re with Virgin Mobile, you are. It’s all we do.
2. Have a phone that can handle 4G. Which every Virgin Mobile Phone can do.
3. Be in a 4G coverage area. Check out our coverage here.
4. Make sure that 4G is switched on in your phone. You can check here.

How do I switch on 4G on my phone?

There are different ways of doing this depending on your phone type. See below some common ones:

  • iPhone: Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Voice and Data > Choose LTE or 4G
  • Android: Menu > Settings > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > Choose the LTE or 4G option
  • Windows: Swipe Right > Settings > mobile+Sim > Sim Settings > Highest Connection > Choose the LTE or 4G option

What Virgin Mobile Plans include 4G?

All of them. If you’re a Virgin Mobile customer, you get 4G as standard.

Which phones are 4G capable?

You can check to see if your phone is 4G capable by looking at the booklet which came with your phone originally or do a quick search for information online.

If my phone is 4G capable can I access 4G?

4G capable plus 4G coverage in your area equals you, enjoying the speed of 4G. If you have all the above but you’re still having problems getting onto 4G, please contact us.

Do I need a new SIM card to access 4G?

No. Your Virgin Mobile SIM is 4G capable so you’re good to go.

How do I find out where there is 4G coverage?

Virgin Mobile uses the Three network, one of the biggest networks in Ireland with 99.6% population coverage (plus 97% coverage for 3G data services and 77.8% for 4G services).

So we’ve got you covered pretty much everywhere. As we’re using the Three network, our 4G coverage is the same as theirs. You can check it out here

How do I know if I am attached to the 4G network?

Depending on what phone you have, you will see either ‘4G’ or ‘LTE’ at the top of your phone screen when you are connected to the 4G network and are in an area that has 4G coverage.


4G is sometimes described as LTE (Long Term Evolution). Depending on the type of phone you have you will see either "4G" or "LTE" at the top of your screen. Both mean you are connected to 4G.

What happens if I am not in a 4G coverage area, will I still be able to use data on my phone?

Yes, your phone will automatically switch from 4G to 3G when outside of a 4G coverage area, so you will still enjoy 3G high speed data.

Can I switch off 4G on my phone?

Of course. There are different ways of doing this depending on your phone type. See below some common ones:
iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Voice and Data > LTE / 4G – ON / OFF
Android: Menu > Settings > Mobile Data > Network Mode > Choose GSM / WCDMA
