Virgin Media Broadband Information
Virgin Media broadband is provided over our own fully owned network, and, as we use coaxial cable, our technology can provide greater bandwidth than telephone lines and so we can provide significantly faster access to the web than operators who provide their service over copper wire technology. We currently use DOCSIS 3.0 (Data Over Cable Services Interface Specification) on our HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) in conjunction with our powerful Virgin Media Hub to provide a great internet connection for our customers.
There are 2 ways to consume our broadband, wired and wireless (WiFi).
Wired is generally faster as you are connected directly to the modem. The speed of your connection depends on what your device can handle. To see what speeds your device can support, check the owner’s manual or perform a web search using its model number. For example, even though you have a 500Mb connection, if you only have a laptop that can only support 100Mb, you won’t see anything over 100Mb.
We manage our network closely to ensure we can provide as much bandwidth as possible to our customers, therefore we are confident in saying we can deliver speeds of 490Mb to over 90% of our customers on the 500Mb product and similarly 245Mb for over 90% of customers on the 250Mb product etc. Run a speed test to see the results for yourself.
Your WiFi can be affected by many different factors. The further the signal has to go, or the more it has to travel through and around, the greater the impact on your speed. Find out more here
