Five Shows You Shouldn’t Miss This Week

Best December TV Shows to watch

It’s beginning to look at lot like two weeks before Christmas! Yes, the countdown is most certainly on – but if you’re taking a break from the shopping, cooking, hall-decking and bell-ringing, we’ve identified some of the finest TV fixes you’ll find this week; from comedy and drama to sport and true-crime, get a load of these super shows…

ROAST BATTLE: CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

Monday @ 10pm, Comedy Central, Virgin TV 127

The comedy combat showcase gets festive this week – but don’t expect too many gift-wrapped presents here! Jimmy Carr, Katherine Ryan and Jonathan Ross are joined by Santa (who looks unusually like Nick Helm) for this hour-long feast of brutal barbs and pithy putdowns courtesy of Desiree Burch, Suzi Ruffell, Ed Gamble and Bobby Mair – turns out your potatoes aren’t the only things that’ll be roasted this Christmas!

THE INNOCENT MAN

Available from Friday on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

Guaranteed to be the true-crime treasure that everyone will be talking about over the holidays, this adaptation of a John Grisham book tells the story of a murder in Oklahoma – and the man sent to death row as a result. We’ve been spoiled for choice when it comes to these series in the past few years, but this one is a level above most of what’s come before; be prepared to gasp, guffaw and gape in amazement at this fascinating tale…

MRS WILSON

Tuesday @ 9pm, BBC One, Virgin TV 108

You might think Ruth Wilson has just gotten a little lazy when it comes to naming characters; in fact, this mini-series tells the story of her own grandmother – and, more importantly, the scarcely believable man she married. Spying, bigamy and betrayal in plentiful supply, it’s one of the most extraordinary stories to hit the screen in ages, and the final episode promises to be even more explosive than what’s come before – which is saying something!

SUNDERLAND TIL I DIE

Available from Friday on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

This one might well be a first – a documentary series about a football team whose fans won’t want to watch! That’s because, as luck would have it, cameras embedded themselves within the club for a season that might just be the worst in the Black Cats’ history, seeing them relegated to the third tier of English football. It makes for a morbidly fascinating documentary, though – just don’t expect your Mackem mates to join you on the sofa!

RTÉ SPORT AWARDS 2018

Saturday @ 9.20pm, RTÉ One, Virgin TV 101

Jonathan Sexton, Joe Schmidt and the Irish team cleaned up at the World Rugby Awards – yet they might leave tonight empty handed! From rowing world champ Sanita Puspure and boxing queen Kellie Harrington to the sensational side that took silver at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, it’s been a golden year for Irish sport; putting the feet up and reliving it all in one evening sounds like the perfect way to spend a Saturday!
