Five Top Political Shows As We Face Brexit

Brexit in 2019

We’d open with some sort of topical observation here, but given the rate that things are changing politically right now we reckon it’d be out of date within seconds. So let’s just leave it at this; when it comes to the B-word situation, anything can happen.

In fact, we’d be tempted to say you couldn’t possibly script it…but that’s not true! If there’s one thing we’ve learned from a plethora of political productions on our screens over the years, it’s that there’s few better settings for a fabulous show. And if you’re yet to be convinced, then try the super selection below to see how the ballot box and the telly box just seem to go hand in hand…

THE THICK OF IT

Seasons 1-4 available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

Even in a real-world industry populated by monsters, Malcolm Tucker is another thing entirely. The foul-mouthed Scot might be one of the most ingenious creations in comedy – and you can guarantee that were he wandering around the House of Commons right now, the UK would have their ship in order! Side-splittingly funny (though not advisable for sensitive ears!), it’s a show to celebrate for years to come.

SCANDAL

Seasons 1-6 available now on Virgin Box Sets

Shonda Rhimes has never been short of a dramatic twist or two – so you knew that letting her get a whiff of the White House would send that meddling mind into overdrive! The result is a show based at a crisis management firm, which shows that the public face of politics is a completely different story to what’s really going on behind the scenes; sexy, smart and sharp, it’s the stuff that binges were made for.

HOUSE OF CARDS

Seasons 1-6 available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

While it will always have a claim to fame as Netflix’s first original series, it will also be remembered for another very good reason; as one of the most magically moody and mysterious shows of the decade. The Underwood-in-Chief may change, but the web of intrigue remains, while the lashings of style in every shot stay true to the last.

MR STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT

Season 1 available now on All4

Mix politics with high school, and you know you’re in for something special! The travails of Tyler Prendergast, the frighteningly ambitious leader of Berenger High, provides the focus for this series. Originally released online, it’s a collection of bite-sized beauts that will make you glad your time in secondary school never featured a bloke like this!

DESIGNATED SURVIVOR

Seasons 1 & 2 available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

A terrorist attack that wipes out a swathe of America’s political elite lands Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Tom Kirkman in the White House…and it turns out that that’s only the start of the drama. Kiefer Sutherland is his usual intense self, and the innovative premise and fast-moving plot makes it engrossing viewing. Not-so-fun fact; these events, in real life, would leave us with President Ben Carson. So, yeah – be glad it’s fiction…
