Aussie Rules - Celebrate Hug An Australian Day!

Chris Hemsworth

You know that calendar on your wall? Turns out it’s incomplete. Because while it might note Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, and all the Bank Holidays that fall along the way, the standout event of April 26th is sadly ignored. But not anymore – and if you’re still unsure what we’re talking about, get ready to turn your wonder down under; prepare your (koala) bear hug and find yourself a mate from Oz, cos this Friday is Hug An Australian day!

OK, so it’s not exactly a national (or international) holiday. But, if nothing else, it presents an opportunity to salute the stars under the southern cross. So pick your favourite and pop them on the box this evening – if you can’t hug them, it’s the next best thing!

ROSE BYRNE

Juliet Naked, available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €4.99

She can do comedy, drama, action, and plenty in between – so seeing her comprehensively nail a romcom role should come as zero surprise!

CHRIS HEMSWORTH

Thor: The Dark World, available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €4.99

The massive Melburnian has gone from Home & Away to Hollywood heavyweight – and wielding Thor’s hammer is about as heavy as things get!

REBEL WILSON

Isn’t It Romantic, available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

She’s one of the funniest females in the business, and this wonderful watch showcases her talents to a ‘t’! Bonus Aussie points; Liam Hemsworth also features!

ERIC BANA

Dirty John, available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

He might have kicked off his career as a comedian, but there’s nothing funny about his turn as the menacing misogynist at the core of this captivating drama!

RACHAEL TAYLOR

Jessica Jones, Seasons 1 & 2 available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

She plays a Big Apple bigwig, but she’s actually straight out of Tassie! Someone on this comic-book creation must be an Antipodean admirer, too, because Eka Darville (Malcolm) is also from the land of Oz!

HUGH JACKMAN

The Greatest Showman, now showing on Sky Cinema, Virgin TV 301

He can sing, he can dance, he can act, and he can probably cook a mean omelette. Try not to get jealous watching this musical masterpiece!

MARGOT ROBBIE

Suicide Squad, available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

In the blink of an eye, this Queensland native became a true treasure of Tinseltown, and yucking it up as Harley Quinn has done her fortunes no harm at all!

RAY MEAGHER

Home and Away, weekdays @ 6.30pm, RTÉ2, Virgin TV 102

Name doesn’t ring a bell? Shame on you...YA FLAMING GALAH!!!

We don’t even need to say anymore, do we? All hail Alf Stewart, the most Australian Australian who ever lived!
