His 2002 big-screen outing is credited with changing the landscape of superhero films forever – and seventeen years later, our favourite friendly neighbourhood crimefighter still has us firmly caught in his web! And Spider-Man: Far From Home is just another reminder of why Peter Parker is such a prominent part of modern cinema…

The latest instalment, available to rent on Virgin Movies from €4.99, grossed more than $1bn at the Box Office – which is an impressive take by anyone’s standards! So what makes the film such a winner? Well, we said we’d count the ways…

TOMMY TERRIFIC

While Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield had their successes in spandex, we’re beginning to think that Tom Holland might just be the supreme Spidey of the lot! An unlikely combination of awkward and assured, he’s the perfect Peter Parker – and his chemistry with on-screen buddies, love interests and even foes is one of the film’s strongest hands…

IT’S MARVEL-OUS

The film has been identified as a final act of the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the conclusion of the 23-title Infinity Saga. If you need the significance of this explained, well, we could be here a while; suffice to say that all manner of Avengers adventures, Civil Wars and loads more besides have created one of the most beloved franchises in film. Endgame sets up this final chapter – which isn’t a bad lead-in as tee-ups go!

AFTER THE WAR

Given the high stakes and high emotion of the final chapters of the Avengers saga, there was little more than our hearts could take – which is why getting back to the rib-tickling form we’ve come to expect from Spidey shows is very welcome indeed! It’s not all lighthearted – he’s still got to save the world every now and then, after all! – but mixing humour in with the heroics is a winning combination.

NOT FAR FROM HOME

While it’s a distance from Spidey’s usual stomping grounds of New York – and, therefore, from the American studios that make the spectacles – this one actually sees Spidey getting European, which means it’s actually Spider-Man: Close To Home for us! Popping up in Prague and loping through London, there’s every chance you’ve had a city break at one of the film’s sets – get your holiday snaps out for comparison pronto!
