The Stars We Bet You Didn’t Know Could Sing

Hollywood Movie Stars who sing

In this month’s PLAY Magazine, we profiled a bunch of Hollywood heavyweights with acting skills to burn – and the ability to sing up a storm too! And it turns out there’s loads of them; check out some of the various vocal talents who might just surprise you…

SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Sing, available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €2.99

This infinitely talented actress has been cast in an extremely varied batch of roles since her debut ¬– some that would test even the greatest of talents! So, if we told you she’s been working on a career as a musician for the past decade we trust you wouldn’t be too surprised. After a string of albums and singles, Johansson turned her vocal chords to bringing Ash, the antropomorphic punk porcupine, to life in this endearing animated comedy.

RUSSELL BRAND

Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek, available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €2.99

First appearing as Sarah Marshall’s new squeeze, Aldous Snow proved to be the hardest to forget, returning in his own feature to the agreement of us all. This time ‘round, Brand lent his vocal chops to some of the fictional rock star’s biggest numbers – to say he was a perfect fit to voice the debauched rocker would be an understatement!

EMMA STONE

La La Land, available to rent now on Virgin Movies from €2.99

When we describe the throwback musical as all-singing all-dancing, we’re not kidding – so thank goodness our Emma is another actress we’d describe as the multi-talented sort! High kicks and high notes hit with aplomb, it was enough to earn her a Best Actress Oscar – and we couldn’t possibly disagree!

JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT

10 Things I Hate About you, available on Sky Cinema from June 8th

Classic teen rom com which launched the careers of Health Ledger, Julia Stiles and a very young looking Joseph Gordon Levitt – who is well able to hit the high notes. While this film might be remembered for Heath Ledgers performance of ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, Gordon-Levitt has an unbelievable voice too – and has expressed his desire to do a musical with Channing Tatum in the future. Somebody.Make.It.Happen.

AMANDA SEYFRIED

Mamma Mia, available now on Netflix, Virgin TV 999

We’d always seen as a bit of a mean girl – so who could imagine she had the voice of an angel all along?! The ABBA-tastic offering gave an array of stars a platform to show off their dulcet tones, though it’s fair to say that there were some more successful than others. Sorry, Pierce…

GERARD BUTLER

PS, I Love You, available to rent on Virgin Movies now from €2.99

The Scotman revealed he’s got quite the voice in this film adaptation of the Cecelia Ahern best-selling novel. He does a mean version of ‘Galway Girl’ – long before Ed Sheeran ever paid homage to the tune. Watching the rest of the film is done so at your own discretion; we won’t accept responsibility for tears shed...
