Five Films You Can’t Miss On Virgin Movies This February
Well, January has come and gone – and in truth we’re happy to see the back of it! Not just because there’s a grand stretch in the evenings (too early?!), but because February arrives with a veritable feast of films to tuck into over the next four weeks! From comic book capers and hard-hitting drama to a horror movie to delight adults and kids alike – just in time for mid-term! – there’s something for everyone; here’s five to fix a date for this month…
BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE
Available to rent from February 4th on Virgin Movies from €4.99
Smart, sharp, and soaked in style, this madcap mystery is a feast for the senses. The approach is gloriously gonzo, as seven strangers converge on a rundown motel where everything is not as it seems. The cast – Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm and Dakota Johnson numbering among them – is as stellar as they come, and the combination of taut storytelling and visual sumptuousness makes this the sort of film you’ll want to watch more than once!
VENOM
Available to rent from February 4th on Virgin Movies from €4.99
Spiderman’s foe gets a solo run – but don’t expect this to be a Spidey sequel. No, it’s a standalone effort in every sense of the word, as a contained adventure unfolds in colourful and cacophonous fashion. The action explodes from the screen like any good blockbuster should, and Tom Hardy’s turn as the anti-hero is as reliably engaging as we’ve come to expect from him. Grab the popcorn – it’s that kind of flick!
GOOSEBUMPS 2: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN
Available to rent from February 18th on Virgin Movies from €4.99
For viewers of a certain age, this will be the ultimate nostalgia trip; for younger fans, it’s simply an introduction to a new favourite franchise! Based on the legendary series by RL Stine, this magnificent monster mash is an ultra-enjoyable romp; the scares are mild enough that there won’t be nightmares afterwards, but there’s always enough going on to keep even the most easily distracted audiences glued to the screen!
THE HATE YOU GIVE
Available to rent from February 18th on Virgin Movies from €4.99
A film firmly of the now, this adaptation of the popular novel sees Amandla Stenberg deliver a performance to make the world sit up and take notice. The story of a teenage girl who witnesses the shooting of her best friend, leaving her caught in a no-man’s land between her preppy school and the community in her neighbourhood, it’s an empathetic and honest look at race, social justice and humanity as a whole – it’s a film everyone should make the time to see.
UTØYA: JULY 22
Available to rent from February 25th on Virgin Movies from €4.99
As uncompromising as it gets, the most deadly terrorist event in Norway’s history is captured in extraordinary fashion. With survivors closely involved in the making, it tells the story from the perspective of the victims, and is shot in a single take, in real time. The result could never be described as easy to watch, but as a piece of visceral and vital filmmaking it is remarkable; emotional, unsettling, and utterly unforgettable.
