But what are Ireland’s most-loved Christmas movies? To find out, we analysed Google search data from across the country during every December since 2021, of the most-beloved festive films of all time.

Joint first place as Ireland’s most searched Christmas movie goes to:

• Love Actually

• Home Alone

Both films pulled in a massive 74,000 searches each, making them officially Ireland’s ultimate festive comfort watches.

Tears over cue cards at the door and cheers as Kevin sets booby traps for the Wet Bandits prove one thing: Ireland is fiercely loyal to its Christmas classics.

Following closely behind were modern favourites and festive thrillers such as Red One, Die Hard, Elf, and It's A Wonderful Life, revealing that Irish households enjoy a mix of nostalgia, chaos, and whimsy in December.

While the country may be divided between Love Actually and Home Alone, a closer look at the county data reveals that the festive rivalry is much closer than it seems, with familiar favourites battling it out all over Ireland.

Love Actually was ranked the top Christmas film in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, and Wicklow. The margin, however, was narrow in many of these counties, with Elf and Home Alone catching up to it.

In Dublin alone, Love Actually and Home Alone were virtually neck and neck, proving that romance and chaotic comedy are loved in the capital in equal measure.

Meanwhile, Donegal, Mayo, Sligo and Tipperary firmly backed Home Alone for top spot. These countries also have a strong preference for high-energy festive films, with Die Hard and Elf frequently making the top five.

In many counties, including Meath, Kildare, Louth, Westmeath and Waterford, there was no runaway favourite. Instead, the top five was tightly contested, with Love Actually, Home Alone, Elf and Die Hard frequently swapping places, showing just how divided Irish households are when it comes to choosing a Christmas movie.

A few unexpected trends have also emerged. Gremlins, The Polar Express, and Last Christmas made it into several county top fives, demonstrating that, while the big two rule, Ireland still embraces unexpected festive choices.

No matter the county, Irish households all seem to share the same habit: returning to the same Christmas films year after year.
