Northern Ireland companies can boost business growth through digital – Virgin Media Ireland CEO at Derry-Strabane Enterprise Week
DERRY – Monday 6th March, 2017 – Virgin Media Ireland CEO Tony Hanway today urged Northern Ireland businesses to focus more on the use of digital technologies to boost business growth and ensure future competitiveness.
Hanway was speaking at the opening of Derry-Strabane Enterprise Week at the Guildhall with the Mayor of Derry City & Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock and Virgin Media’s Digital Director, Virgin Media Business UK, Steve Wind-Mozley.
Supported by Virgin Media Business, Derry-Strabane Enterprise Week is exploring how digital technology can bring new opportunities with workshops, seminars and networking events all aimed at unlocking and expanding the potential of Northern Ireland businesses.
“Northern Ireland businesses must capture a greater proportion of the digital economy. We believe that no citizen or business should be left behind. Our aim is to support businesses as they seize the opportunity of the digital future,” Hanway said.
He highlighted a Virgin Media study conducted by Oxford Economics which looked at the contribution to revenue growth for UK companies over one year. It showed that digital technology contributed to a business revenue growth of £6.3 Billion for Wales, £10.3 Billion for Scotland and £38 Billion for London which was the highest performing region. However, the digital revenue growth figure for Northern Ireland was just £285 Million.
“Looking at the percentage growth represented by these figures, that is revenue growth of a half of one per cent (0.5%) from digital for Northern Ireland businesses, compared to a 4.3% average revenue growth in the rest of the UK. We need to be sure that Northern Ireland does not lag the rest of the UK in terms of the future growth opportunity that exists.”
“Northern Ireland must take full advantage of the digital opportunities that lie ahead including the use of digital to drive domestic and export led growth. We’re supporting this agenda through our £3 billion Project Lightning programme, which will connect an extra 4 million homes and businesses to superfast broadband speeds across our cable network by 2019. When this current investment programme is completed, a total of 17 million premises will be connected to Virgin Media – an increase from coverage of around 50% of premises to two-thirds of UK and Northern Ireland premises.”
“Our aim is to take Northern Ireland businesses into the digital future providing all the tools you need to lay claim to your fair share of the digital opportunities that are out there,” Hanway told a packed auditorium at the Guildhall in Derry.
