Gap between Virgin Media and competitors widens further

Ookla’s independent testing with consumers shows Virgin Media delivering Ireland’s fastest broadband at TRIPLE the speed of its nearest competitor

Wednesday 22nd March 2017: It’s a fact - Virgin Media is definitively Ireland’s fastest broadband network. The independent measurement institute Ookla has confirmed this once again following their analysis of over 1 million speed tests by Irish Internet users across the 5 main broadband operators in Ireland. You can see for yourself at: http://www.speedtest.net/awards/ie/isp/2016

During the 6 month analysis period, Virgin Media delivered average broadband speeds of 228 Mbps to customers across its fibre power network in Ireland – almost TRIPLE the speed of its nearest competitor. The results show that Virgin Media customers are consistently getting the fastest broadband speeds in Ireland.

Ookla Speedtest is the global standard in Internet connection testing and is carried out directly and independently by consumers themselves. The analysis took place from July to December 2016.

Paul Farrell, Vice President of Commercial at Virgin Media said, “Ookla’s findings place us at the top of the rankings, widening the gap between us and the competition. Because of the investments we’ve made in our fibre network, Virgin Media has the fastest broadband right now - not in a future network that others are talking about but have yet to deliver.

“The faster the broadband service you use then the better you can enjoy TV, movies and music. People are voracious for content with broadband device usage doubling every three years in Ireland. The average Virgin Media home currently consumes over 100GB of data per month with up to 8 connected devices. That level of demand is growing year on year. That’s why we’re continuing our commitment to being the best by upgrading and expanding our network, rolling out the Virgin Hub and enhancing the in home WiFi experience to provide even faster speeds in the future.

“Virgin customers don’t have to share their network with anyone else, so they can be 100% confident they will always get the fastest speeds. While there is a lot of noise as our competitors make spurious claims about their “ fake fibre” broadband these results clearly prove only Virgin customers truly enjoy superfast broadband. ”

Jamie Steven, Executive Vice President of Ookla said: “The Ookla Speed-test is designed to show which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are fastest by showing the top performing speeds achieved by each ISP. There are some 90 million Ookla Speed-tests carried out across 40,000 ISPs worldwide each month. Ookla calculates its findings from the highest performing top 10% of all speed test results.”

Virgin Media’s 360 Mbps service is available to over 90% of homes on the Virgin Media network. You can download an incredible 8 series TV boxset in HD in just 80 seconds, download a favourite album in less than 10 seconds and download a full movie in 20 seconds.
