As the League of Ireland kicks off this Friday, Virgin Media deepens its commitment by backing three iconic clubs
Dublin, Wednesday 4th February 2026: As the new League of Ireland season gets underway this Friday, Virgin Media has announced its support for three of the league’s most historic clubs — Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne FC and Galway United — through its broadband business.
The partnerships reinforce Virgin Media’s ongoing commitment to Irish football at a time of significant momentum for the domestic game, with attendances, fan engagement and wider interest in the League of Ireland continuing to rise.
As part of the sponsorship, the Virgin Media brand will feature on the jerseys of Galway United (back-of-shirt) and Shamrock Rovers (shorts), while equally supporting Shelbourne FC as a key club partner.
Commenting on the announcement, Emer McCarthy, Head of Brand and Marketing at Virgin Media, said:
“While our television business continues to bring live League of Ireland action to viewers nationwide, this sponsorship — led by our broadband business — is about backing clubs and communities at grassroots level. Through our broadband network we connect homes, families and football fans across Ireland, and we’re proud to support the League of Ireland where it matters most: on the pitch.”
Club representatives welcomed Virgin Media’s support, highlighting the importance of visible, long‑term commercial partnerships for the continued growth of the League of Ireland and the communities each club represents.
Daniel Cleary, Commercial Manager for Shamrock Rovers FC said:
“Shamrock Rovers F.C. is proud to partner with Virgin Media for the 2026 season. Virgin’s scale, ambition, and commitment to engaging audiences aligns closely with Shamrock Rovers’ continued growth on and off the pitch”.
Sam O'Neill, Head of Commercial & Marketing, Galway United said:
“We're absolutely delighted to partner with Virgin Media ahead of the 2026 season. This partnership is about more than branding; it’s about backing a club and a community that lives and breathes football in the West of Ireland. This sponsorship reflects the positive direction of the League of Ireland, and we’re thrilled to have Virgin Media supporting Galway United at such an exciting time for the club”.
Tomás Quinn, CEO of Shelbourne FC added:
“We’re delighted to welcome Virgin Media Ireland as a new partner of Shelbourne FC. It is a partnership built on shared values around community, connection, and making a positive impact across Irish sport. Virgin Media Ireland’s support will play an important role as we continue to grow the club on and off the pitch, and we look forward to building a successful relationship together.”
The 2026 League of Ireland season kicks off on Friday, 6 February, with fixtures taking place nationwide. The announcement follows Virgin Media’s recent sponsorship of Bohemians FC Women’s first team, announced last week.
