Wi-Free

What is Wi-Free?

At Virgin Media, we’re in the business of connecting people, so we love Wi-Free. It’s our way of letting Virgin Media customers access WiFi signals around the country.

How’s it work? Easy. Your Virgin Media modem offers two WiFi signals: A private one you and your family, and a separate one set aside for friends and visitors to access when they want to connect in your home – as long as they’re subscribed to Virgin Media Broadband. Likewise, you’re able to connect to any of the 300,000 Virgin Media modems around the country, yourself.

This is offered at no extra cost to our Broadband customers, keeps your private password safe, and keeps you connected to the world around you.

Only Virgin Media Broadband customers can connect to the Horizon Wi-Free network. If you haven’t joined the network yet, just follow these simple steps:

1. Log into My Virgin Media.
2. Visit the Wi-Free area in My Products, then go to Broadband section.
3. There you’ll be asked to set a password unique to Wi-Free.
4. The first time you connect a device to the Wi-Free network, you’ll be prompted to enter your

My Virgin Media username and the password you just created.
After that, your device will automatically connect to a Wi-Free signal whenever one’s in reach.

How do I disable Wi-Free on my modem?

If you’re worried about your safety, we get it. But please know that Wi-Free is fully protected and completely separate to your own private network. This way, it’s impossible for Wi-Free users to gain access to the customer’s home network.

If you have already set a Wi-Free password, but still wish to disable the service so that your modem no longer provides a Wi-Free signal, follow these simple steps:

1. Log into My Virgin Media.
2. Under the My Products, Broadband section, click on Wi-Free.
3. Click on “Deactivate Horizon Wi-Free”.

It could take up to 72 hours for your opt-out request to be processed. After this time, your Virgin Media modem will no longer offer the Wi-Free service.

Unfortunately, now that your account is not participating in the Wi-Free programme, you will no longer be able to connect to other Wi-Free networks. If you change your mind, and decide to enable the service again, just log into My Virgin Media, choose Wi-Free and follow the prompts. Again, please allow up to 72 hours for the change to be made to your account. After that, you’re good to go.

Do I need an app to access Wi-Free?

Nope. As long as you’re a Virgin Media Broadband customer, you’re practically ready to go.

How secure is the Wi-Free service?

Your security is our top priority, which is why Wi-Free acts as a completely separate entity – even in your home. The Wi-Free network was designed with a unique WPA Enterprise authentication to make it impossible for unfamiliar Wi-Free users to gain access to a home or private network.

The Wi-Free network also uses a different IP address from a different subnet than the home user, so every base is covered.

How many devices can I connect to Wi-Free?

One of the magic things about Wi-Free is how many people can connect to it. Your modem can host up to five devices at the same time, as long as the device owners are Virgin Media Broadband customers.

Just a quick note: if one user disconnects to make room for another, it may take up to 5 minutes for your modem to process the change.
