SIP is an application-layer control protocol.
SIP trunking allows voice and data together over a single line which means better communication at a lower cost for businesses.
SIP removes the need for IP-PSTN gateways, as well as BRI and PRI subscriptions. This makes it quite a cost effective solution for businesses.

How it works
SIP Trunking is an IP-based voice solution which lets you make secure calls, usually from an IP phone or desk-based softphone to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), and vice versa.
This technology is beginning to replace traditional voice services such as ISDN, as it brings voice and data together over one network connection – a WAN (Wide Area Network), for example – rather than needing dedicated TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) circuits.
Benefits of SIP trunking:
- Increased flexibility
- Reduced calling costs
- Greater scalability
- Improved call handling flexibility and efficiency
- Reduced hardware costs
- Reduces or removes on-going support and maintenance costs of hardware media gateways
